Behind the lens of a participant in BIC 73

1. Introduce yourself and share what inspired you to sign up for the Basic Instructor Course (BIC).

Hello! My name is Marc and I was part of the recent BIC 73. I joined mainly out of curiosity and to try to get more out of my comfort zone after my friend Zulfami, who was planning to join, told me about it and asked me if I wanted to join him.

2. What was the most memorable or impactful experience during your BIC journey?

The most memorable experience I had on my BIC journey was the solo night walk through Imbiah Nature Trail. The entirety of BIC had been very fast-paced and this walk let me look back at my experience as a whole and see how much I’ve learned about being an Instructor and also about myself.

3. What is the biggest lesson, skill, or value that you have gained from completing BIC?

The biggest lesson I gained from BIC was learning to push beyond what I thought I was capable of. Before joining the course, I was unsure if I would be able to keep up with some of the more physically demanding activities. However, with the encouragement and support of my fellow batchmates, I was able to persevere and complete the challenges together with them. Through this experience, I learned the importance of resilience, teamwork, and supporting one another. It showed me that personal growth often comes from stepping outside of my comfort zone and trusting the people around me. .

4. As one of the latest BIC graduates during CAMP CHALLENGE’s 30th Anniversary year, what does it mean to be part of this legacy and community?

Being part of CAMP CHALLENGE’s 30th Anniversary year is a meaningful experience, as it reminds me that I am joining a community that has impacted many people over the past three decades. At the same time, BIC 73 was a relatively small and close-knit batch, with only seven participants. Because of this, we were able to get to know and support one another throughout the course, creating a strong sense of camaraderie. While we are only a small part of CAMP CHALLENGE’s long history, I am proud to have shared this journey with my batchmates and to now be part of the wider instructor community.

5. Looking ahead, how do you hope to contribute as an instructor and make a positive impact on future participants?

Looking ahead, I hope to contribute as an instructor by creating a supportive environment where participants feel encouraged to challenge themselves and try new things. One of the things that helped me the most during BIC was the support and encouragement from my batchmates and trainers, especially during the more physically demanding activities. As an instructor, I hope to provide that same encouragement to others and help create positive experiences that participants can learn and grow from. Even if the impact is small, I hope to leave participants with greater confidence in themselves and memories they can look back on fondly.
